When I was working on the first draft of my novel I made lists of characteristics for each of my main characters. Despite that, there was one major character I was having trouble seeing. As an exercise I started watching for her on my train rides to work and in crowds. I finally found her in a Land’s End catalog. I clipped out the photo and put it in my journal. Whenever I was having trouble getting at this character on the written page, I could look at her and it helped me fully imagine her personality.–Julie

Thanks, Julie, for this idea. I love thinking of you watching for your character and finding her!
