Third Place Winning Essay — Winter Contest 2014 — 18 Comments

  1. Just read your piece,Lisa, and enjoyed it immensely. You have a lovely stark style that belies the complexity of what you write. Great job.

    • Thanks for the feedback Patricia.

In relation to my style, I think this one is pared back a lot from the way I often write. It seemed appropriate for the structure I had set myself – a quick sketch to capture the essence of each card.

I’m pleased you enjoyed reading my essay. 🙂

  2. Hi, Lisa, I really appreciate your innovative presentation in this essay. I’ll probably buy the cards too! Your personal insight, as told through the archetypes, is enlightening, intimate and fun. I especially enjoyed your communications with the natural world. Keep writing!

  3. I enjoyed this creative and original structure for your essay, Lisa. What an interesting exercise for any of us. I appreciated your very thoughtful, personal reflection in considering who you were in light of what the archetype represented. Very nice.

    • Thanks Mary,

I found that some of the archetypes sparked immediate thoughts, while others I really had to take time to think about, as they weren’t obvious at all. This process was interesting in itself, regardless of the finished essay.

For me, each archetype I used was a different frame – working out what belonged in the frame, was one part, and the other aspect was to contemplate whether it applied in an anecdotal, reflective or metaphorical way.

      Thanks for your comments Mary,

      Lisa

  4. I agree, Sam! We have a link to the cards at the top of the essay where Lisa first tells us about them in her epigraph.
I am so glad you have kicked off the comments. I think it would be an interesting contest to have WIR members each do a lyric essay self-portrait using these cards!

  5. Hi Lisa,
I like the way you have used these cards to introduce your self. It is always fascinating to me how in art the tools are all around us. Now those cards with there archetypes presents a wonderful structure to tell a story.

Like Sam Turner, I would also like to buy these cards.

    Well done.

    • Hi Maureen,

Yes, I agree that there are things which surround us to inspire new stories.

I am attracted to different kinds of card decks and have these, along with various tarot card packs, inspiring images packs, among others. I think I am drawn to the imagery and just handling the cards can spark many ideas.

Sheila has linked to the Archetype cards above, so if you decide to buy them, I hope you find them inspiring. I’m almost tempted to pick another twelve and see how the self portrait changes. 🙂

      Thanks for commenting.

  6. SECOND PLACE? OR THIRD? Doesn’t matter. It could tie for First, Second OR Third! My first IMPULSE is to purchase these magical ARCHETYPE CARDS!
Please send me details. Now, to go back and read your twelve again. How many in the whole deck? What fun!

    • Thanks Sam,

I’m glad you enjoyed it. Yes it was a lot of fun to write. I see Sheila has put a link directly to the Archetype Cards on Amazon above. I just used them as a way to link some vignettes, and I’m sure they could be used in other ways.

      Have fun exploring them!

      Lisa
