Mother’s Curse — 1 Comment

  1. Working the other side of this story, with thirty years of ob/gyn, and as a mother of an only child with quite a similar tale it was easy to succumb to the power of this winning story, finding only the first paragraph a bit confusing. Once I sorted who was who and who was talking the story pulled me along to hear my own relationship with my daughter and how frequently the same was played out in our medical practice. I think there s some degree of mother’s curse in the forging of bonds between moms and their girls, worlds away from moms and sons. I distinctly recall thinking I am sure this same scenario was the common tale in caves long before tents, in igloos and high rise apartments across the world for eons. There is, after the strife, after the emotional altercations that embody the necessary separation to independence, daughters are blessed if they can return to the bond. When daughter becomes a mom there is often the debut of wisdom, a rising curtain of understanding of “mother”. This well written essay gets us there and closes with what all of us hope for with and for our girls.
