A New Way to Publish — 1 Comment

  1. Hi, Sheila

Thanks for Penny’s informative article on self-publishing.

I would like to add that POD is becoming more popular even when a book is not self-published (meaning, publishing paid for by the author). Large traditional publishers are using POD when they have to crank out a lot of books in a hurry. This has happened when a book quickly became a best-seller and the original supply of copies was running low before a new supply could be printed in the traditional way, which can take weeks or months. Readers can’t tell the difference.

There is another excellent small publishing house using POD that I recommend adding to your list. It’s Wyatt-MacKenzie Publishing Inc. (http://www.wymacpublishing.com). Nancy Cleary is the founder and owner. How do I know Wyatt-MacKenzie is so good? They traditionally published my book, What I Thought I Knew, and Nancy has been a dream to work with. Wyatt-MacKenzie has used both major distribution to bookstores as well as POD, so Nancy knows both sides. To be traditionally published with Wyatt-MacKenzie, as opposed to self-published, I needed a platform, a solid book proposal, and the willingness to do a good deal of marketing for my book, just as most authors must do today.

Nancy has also created a unique self-publishing program some authors might be interested in. It’s an “Imprint Program” that is completely transparent and provides authors with their own publishing entity and account with the POD printer/distributor Lightning Source – without a middleman. Nancy has specialized in branding authors and packaging books for 20 years and has run her indie press for 10 years, so she combines the benefits of both in her Imprint Program.

Nancy has also written a book, A Book is Born, which guides new authors through the publishing and publicity processes. It was selected for 2008 members by NAWW (the National Association of Women Writers), which published Penny Sansevieri’s article. Penny reviewed it: “Packed with tips and helpful advice this book is not just a ‘how-to’ for publishing or seeing your book in print, it’s a must for any author looking to go from idea to finished book. Get it, and get published today!”

    Cheers,
    Barbara
