Ellie Mathews' writing awards include the 2007 Milkweed Prize for Children's Literature. She has published short fiction in Cricket and Cicada magazines, the memoir, The Ungarnished Truth: A Cooking Contest Memoir (which won a Notable Book award), the YA novel The Linden Tree and Ambassador to the Penguins: A Naturalists' Year Aboard a Yankee Whaleship.
