Interview with Bryan Cohen — 2 Comments

  1. I am fascinated by what Bryan had to say about the relationship between improvisation and creative writing. I also found his very theatrical dialogue-oriented response to his own prompt about heart, soul and brain enormously intriguing. I think it is helpful for the arts to cross-polinate. Just as we may use art or photography as a prompt, so also can we put ourselves in a theatrical frame of mind to get a richer perspective. Bryan reminds me of my younger brother who also has a very quick mind. I’m doubtful I could ever do half so many things half so efficiently! Yet, I found myself agreeing with Sheila’s quip that Byran’s character of Soul did not seem soulful. Bryan countered that Soul was meant to be a cool dude, but this was one thing I think didn’t come off clearly in what otherwise was such a creative improvisational exercise. So as I read about Byran I feel awe about his incredible creative capability but also realize that everyone can use help with his or her craft. Sometimes people who are so talented at quick-thinking improvisation can also benefit from careful-craft suggestions made by people like Sheila.

  2. What a way to sell a book! Hard to believe everyone doesn’t want that! I am especially grateful that Bryan cited #12..brain, heart and soul in which resides those fab characters that make up all my subconscious world. It explains to me why, at least currently, I’m writing like a fiend, it wakes me up, continues when the screen blurs…from need for sleep, for tears of guffawing laughter, curtains of sadness falling down my face, unleashed feelings held in deep darkness for years, all because I look at the stuff so deep down I must take a flashlight to find them. Right now the brownie mix is down there in the kitchen waiting for me to finish this oh so satisfying interruption. I love this guy’s sense of humor as he responds to Sheila’s probing. Great interview, great insight, powerful use of all his gifts, which is why he rolls on like some delightful armored tank with its brake off. Gotta go buy the book now against the day I might be free of this driven attitude I have and find myself up against the brick wall that apparently looms in every writer’s future. But Bryan mkes it seem less daunting. But first, the brownies…
