Interview with Jan Vallone — 2 Comments

  1. OMG!This interview is so packed with usable info that it’s like taking a course. I took notes, printed the whole article for future reference and underlined most of the pages! I pulled my husband from his computer..and his job!….to listen to the excerpts that struck me hardest. In response to Jan’s comments about writing contradictions within the self, he said,”Yeah once it’s out there, it’s out there!”, meaning that risking and daring is enormous, but necessary and you can’t reel it back in once printed (I should be so lucky!) I’ll keep that in mind as my own work is critiqued at conference mid-month. There is so much to read and so little time! I am so grateful for her many resources and plan to utilize most of them as time allows, which only means I must prioritize the time and then begin. As Jan spoke of the “intimate tone of the memoirist”…writing as I speak, I read that with relief that I’m not burdened by having to erase lawyer-speak or medic-speak as part of my background. Jan had to learn to speak in a whole ‘nother language in order to impart her story. I especially loved her comment concerning the inclusion of the reader: freedom to imagine and infer. Madeline L’Engle still lives and breathes among us! That was her mantra, to never forget to include the reader. A great regret is that, long before I knew I’d step out into open air without a net…writing my own memoir….I could have studied at her knee, and missed the opportunity. But she still resonates. Jan is correct: writing has a value of itself, needs no approval for the doing, and brings self-revelation, bidden or not. I love to think that, leaping over the usual impediments to searching for a publisher, I might just get me straight to a cocktail party and remember, between sugary alcoholic imbibing, to listen for that guest who also grew up in an orphanage, came home to live with a disconnected and very toxic motoher and is looking for exactly my story to publish! I laughed out loud! Thanks, Sheila, for your astute questions and for presenting a true teacher who happens to be a superlative writer….and who so willingly shares. For the memoirist, the material is invaluable.
