Keeping a Writer’s Journal? 21 Prompts to Help You — 3 Comments

  1. Cyndi and Nancy,
Thank you for these responses. Journal keeping is a very personal art and adding your own needs and flair are essential. Thank you for letting us know your situations and solutions.

    Yours,

  2. Hi Sheila,

What an article filled with some great ideas! I’ve always kept a travel journal. When I read back through my entries, it’s amazing some of the things I don’t remember, until I read about what I wrote.

I’ve also written some word meditations. Those were fun and interesting writings. If you recall my Nike shoes piece (where the shoes speak) – that came from a word meditation on shoes.

I used to keep a weather journal years ago, and after reading your suggestion this is one I’d like to do again.

The idea to “collect tidbits, odds and ends” and put them under a title relating to the seasons is one I’d like to do.

I always carry a notebook with me and even keep one by my bedside. I don’t know what I’d do without them.

I’ve also been practicing meditative writing in which I do a mini-meditation of deep breathing for four minutes and then write – just write whatever comes to mind without judging it or censoring it. This process has led to some breakthroughs.

Thank you for sharing all of these wonderful ideas to try.

    Cyndi

  3. Sheila,

I do not keep a hard-copy journal. I have done so in the past and I think it’s a good idea, but I prefer to do most of my writing on line. I have arthritis and writing with a pen or pencil is sometimes too hard on my hands. Occasionally, though, I do make notes when I see something interesting in certain situations, like watching TV, traveling, being out in a doctor’s office, restaurant, etc. Or. since I write memoir, when I remember something from the past or come across a fact I can use in my writing.

The prompts above are all good ones, which I’ve used myself of given to my students, when I was still teaching.
