  1. What a hard lesson, beautifully captured. It leaves me feeling sad. There is so much unstated pain here — your friend, your mom, your kids… Well done!

  2. Writing one’s experience, coming from our vulnerability, helps us and our readers grow. I love reading the comment replies to Cecile’s essay and seeing this unfolding. Our stories bring forward the memories and stories of others; we see our likenesses; we see we are not alone in our missteps and our triumphs.

  3. This is a valuable essay addressing the perpetual subject of discrimination and it’s fallout. The losses continue to outweigh the gains, costing the nation untold treasure. In these times everyone is necessary to row the boat. Discrimination is unbelievably costly. Who is it that thinks we can afford to throw away anyone with any potential to contribute?

I enjoyed the flow of the essay, the voice of the child evolving to the life experience of the adult. Thank you for it.

  4. Hi Cecily,
Your essay brought back a time in middle school that I have regretted to this day and can’t seem to forget. My best friend’s father because of an accident had had to go into a mental hospital. Since I am the same age as you, you know that mental illness was just never spoken of. One day, when I was, as girls will get, upset with her, and in the presence of another girl, made a comment about my friend’s father. I didn’t come right out and say he was crazy, but the implication was there. I said it, knowing it would hurt her, and that it would get around. Our friendship ended that day. And I have felt guilty ever since.

  5. Loved the dialogue to show the characters in action. Great piece and one that shows the significant impact the times and culture have on experiences that mold us and influence our decisions. Congratulations and keep writing!

  6. That was a beautiful essay, Cecil. It was artfully composed and kept me reading to see how the tension would be resolved. The ending was a moving twist on your relationship with Beni.

I hope I can read more of your writing.

    Regards,
    Karin
