Tender is the Harvest, A Winning Essay by Laurie McConnachie — 11 Comments

  1. Laurie,

I have read your essay more than once. It simply invites the reader to admire and experience your story, and ultimately, your writing, one more time. I do not often think of the words “beauty” and “sadness” as synonymous. However, You write about a beautiful sadness in a way that is so real and compelling. Well done!

    With appreciation, Judy Kvinsland

  2. This was a gorgeous essay. I too lost my mother to cancer. I wasn’t as young as you but at the end it was in her brain and it was so sad. You did an amazing job of bringing the reader with you in your journey. Well done!

    • Thank you, Morgan.

I am very sorry about the loss of your mother and that her brain was also impacted by cancer. When the brain is affected, I think it can bring its own particular kind of sadness.

I greatly appreciate your encouraging comments about the essay. Thank you for reading it. It touches me to know that you felt like you were on the journey with me as you read it.

      Thank you!

  3. A much deserved winning essay, Laurie, beautifully written, bringing me to all the scenes, the heart, the shared emotions, the profound loss of a woman’s mother, and ultimately, the
depth of connection between such a death and the newborn joy with a young daughter. (To say nothing of the remarkable sharp parallel with pumpkins carved).

I look forward to reading your winning write, Nancy Lamb, as well as yours, Julie.

    • Nancy, thank you for your kind and thoughtful comments about my essay.

It is very gratifying that you were touched by it and that you saw the layers and connections that revealed themselves to me as I wrote it.

I feel like you understand what I was trying to express and that is very meaningful to me.

      Thank you!

  4. Okay, WOW! That was lyrical and magical and you brought me to an unbearably beautiful place of death and rebirth. I still have what feels like an apple in my throat. Well done Laurie.

    • Thank you, Julie!

I was feeling lyrical energy when I wrote it, so it makes me happy that you felt that as you read it.

It also uplifts me that you picked up on the “unbearable beautiful” aspects of the essay. I am struck by the juxtaposition of beauty and pain in the experience of life and I am so glad that it came through in the writing.

By the way, I had a catch in my throat for much of the time I was writing it.

      Your comments are much appreciated!

    • Nancy, thank you for kind comments.

I am so glad that the essay touched you and you found it evocative. It also encourages me that you think others will be able to relate to the moments I was trying to capture and make sense of through this form of expression.

      Thank you so much!
