Keeping the Political Personal: “To Give or to Deny” by Journalist Amy Hewes — 5 Comments

  1. Thanks so much for this wonderful essay. It reminds me that couching the political–or any other large issue–in terms of the personal allows the reader a way in through heart territory. I’ve been having a hard time writing, and I thought it was because I was pouring most of my energy into organizing a Lights for Liberty vigil in my small town. But now I realize that it’s really because I was trying to write on topics that are not essential to me. This essay made me realize that I might try writing about my experience organizing this vigil in a way that is as apolitical as possible, given my very strong liberal politics. Thanks Sheila and Amy!

  2. Thanks so much for this wonderful essay. I’ve been having trouble writing lately, and I thought it was because I’d been pouring all my energy for the last few weeks into organizing a Lights for Life vigil in my small town. But now I’m realizing that the problem was that I was trying to write about things that aren’t feeling essential to me right now when writing about organizing the vigil–and the vigil itself–might be a better focus. Thank you so much for this!

  3. Beautiful story about your mother’s caregivers and how we should all be treated. I agree that we run this current system without people’s best interests. We live in a world that cares nothing or very little about healthy people, valuing money as a priority, hoarding resources and then having “the people,” bail them out, never having to face consequences. Good writing – very thoughtful.
